Chaos erupts at DP delegates conference as Sebamala’s name is omitted from presidential ballot
The Democratic Party’s electoral commission is working to resolve a crisis that emerged after Bukoto Central MP Richard Sebamala’s name was struck off the list of candidates for party president general early this morning.
At around 3 a.m., chaos broke out as delegates attending the party’s 12th national delegates conference protested the official list of candidates ahead of the vote for president general. The list included incumbent Norbert Mao, Elia Alitia, and Michael Lulume Bayiga. However, one of the stronger contenders, Sebamala, was notably missing, despite having spent much of Friday and Saturday rallying support from delegates.
In response to the omission, Sebamala insisted that no voting should take place unless his name was reinstated on the ballot. The Mbarara South Division Police Commander, SP Esther Namara, intervened and called for a ceasefire as tensions escalated.
