President Museveni has during recent years lampooned his predecessors, Milton Obote and Idi Amin, as useless, and attempted to create a narrative that Uganda as it is today started in 1986. What exactly informed Museveni’s diatribes remains unknown, but according to his own admission, he cut his teeth in politics in the Obote I government, and during the Amin regime he was involved in subversive activities. After losing the December 1980 elections with his UPM party winning only one seat by Crispus Kiyonga, Museveni waged a five-year rebel war against Obote II and subsequently captured power, after which he discarded his Marxist ideals—which was the driving force for liberation movements across Africa—and started romance with Western Capitalists.
