ICC prepares to try Joseph Kony in absentia
The International Criminal Court is set for the first time to hear confirmation of trying in absentia Joseph Kony, the commander of the Lord's Resistance Army. The registrar of the Hague-based court, Osvaldo Zavala Giler, who is in Uganda, says the process of choosing the defense lawyers for Kony is at the tail end. Zavala states that if the charges are confirmed, it could quicken the commencement of the case. The ICC issued a warrant of arrest against Kony 19 years ago, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity, which include murder, rape, sexual slavery, using child soldiers, and forced marriages.
