TB prevalence in prisons is eight times higher than public
A 2023 national survey by Makerere University School of Public Health has revealed that the prevalence of tuberculosis among Uganda’s prison population is eight times higher than in the general public.
The multi-disease survey, which assessed the burden of TB, HIV, and COVID-19 among inmates and prison staff attributes the elevated risk to overcrowding and poor conditions in detention facilities.
