Uganda to strengthen laws in fight against environmental degradation
The central government has called for increased funding to ensure adequate protection of the environment. The call by the state minister for environment, Beatrice Anywar, comes in the wake of increasing incidences of environmental degradation that have seen several swamps and forests reclaimed by developers. The minister says she needs support to monitor and develop these areas to ensure they are protected. For her part, Elsie Atafua, the Country Representative for the United Nations Population Fund, insisted that it is not enough to tell families to move away from charcoal or firewood usage, the government should rather be at the forefront of providing solutions that persuade people to look at protecting the environment. In response, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, Katie Airey, said her government was committed to supporting initiatives that are geared towards protecting the environment.
