AG Kiryowa Kiwanuka seeks amendment to law allowing acquittal over torture claims
Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka has expressed disagreement with the law that allows for the acquittal of suspects if they can prove in court that they were tortured during detention. The Attorney General argues that this focus on torture unfairly denies justice to victims of criminal acts. Both the Uganda Human Rights Commission and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions support the need to amend the law so that torture is addressed separately when it arises in trials.
