Rising tension in Gulu as LRA war orphans face school dismissal over unpaid tuition
Tension is rising in Gulu after about 35 orphans, born during the LRA war, were turned away from Gulu University and the Gulu School of Clinical Officers in Gulu City due to failure to pay tuition.
The students, many of whom receive partial government support, say their already uncertain future is now at risk after being warned they could be discontinued if they do not clear their tuition balances in full.
The orphans have been receiving support from War Victims and Children Networking, an NGO that brings together victims of the northern Uganda war. However, the organisation, led by Stella Lanam Angel, says it has run out of funds, as it solely relies on donations from well-wishers—leaving the students' academic future hanging in the balance.
