Besigye’s lawyers storm out of court
Lawyers of former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye and his aide, Obeid Lutale, stormed out of court after objecting to the presiding magistrate’s decision to proceed with the treason case against their client without Martha Karua, the lead defence lawyer. This followed a statement by Erias Lukwago, one of the lawyers present in court, who said Besigye had given special instructions to Karua, making her presence in court essential. However, when the court offered the prosecution an opportunity to explain why it had requested an emergency production warrant against Besigye and his co-accused, Besigye objected. Chief Magistrate Christine Nantege concurred with him, especially since the prosecution had requested to amend the charges against him. The magistrate ruled that the prosecution should make such amendments in Karua’s presence on May 29.
