MPs push government for more farmer registration funds
As Uganda races to meet the European Union (EU) deforestation-free commitments, the House Committee on Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries is demanding that the government release funds to aid in the farmer registration exercise, as financial and technological limitations continue to slow down EUDR compliance for smallholder farmers. The EU regulation compelling farmers to register and prove that they did not contribute to deforestation could affect the entire coffee sector value chain. Speaking at a stakeholder engagement, Linda Auma, the chairperson of the committee, warned that the Shs13.5 billion recently released by the government is just a drop in the ocean.
