Government reveals plan to end charcoal burning
Area officials in Northern Uganda have blamed security agencies for abetting illegal charcoal burning in the region, despite a presidential executive order of 2023 prohibiting large-scale charcoal production to conserve the environment. According to a report presented to the Minister for Northern Uganda Affairs, charcoal burning remains rampant in the sub-region, resulting in high temperatures. During a consultative meeting with leaders of the West Nile, Lango, and Acholi sub-regions, the minister highlighted the need for leaders to engage local communities on the dangers of continuous tree cutting.
