Experts warn of food insecurity
A recent seed assessment by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), has revealed a staggering 86% seed gap in Uganda, meaning the majority of farmers are not accessing certified, improved seed varieties. Despite quality seed contributing up to 50% of crop productivity, most Ugandan farmers continue to experience poor yields trapped by counterfeit seed and unscrupulous dealers. However, hope may lie in digital innovation. Dr. Paul Mwambu, Commissioner for Crop Inspection and Certification at the Ministry of Agriculture, says Uganda is now adopting ICT tools to track seed movement from breeder to farmer, ensuring only genuine seed reaches the gardens.
