DP Delegates meet to elect New Leader
The Democratic Party Delegates' Conference is set to start in earnest in Mbarara this afternoon, after a day of preliminaries. Over 1,400 delegates have arrived for the conference, which is intended to renew the party's leadership, with several positions at stake. At this moment, several party members are waiting to present their accreditation so they can gain access to the conference premises. Three candidates are running for the position of Party President General, which will come with an opportunity to stand for President in the coming general elections in January. The candidates are incumbent Norbert Mao, Bukoto Central MP Richard Sebamala, and Buikwe South MP Michael Lulume Bayiga. The delegates, drawn from across the country, have gathered at the Asamar Hotel in Ruti, Mbarara City, for a four-day conference that will help chart the party's way forward ahead of the 2026 general elections. Yesterday, the delegates called for a revival of the party and for it to be aligned with its original values, ahead of the national elections set for January 14 next year.
