Obongi teams qualify for TICAD Cup, football fosters peace and hope
Three football teams from Obongi District have emerged victorious in local qualifiers, earning a spot in this year’s TICAD Cup after a competitive series of matches within the refugee settlement. The tournament, organised by JICA Uganda in partnership with the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Office of the Prime Minister, aims to promote peaceful coexistence between refugees and host communities through the power of sport. Football has also played a key role in addressing social challenges such as teenage pregnancies, which remain prevalent in refugee camps. With the final competition set for September at the FUFA Technical Centre in Jinja, the selected girls' teams are now training hard, hoping not only to win but also to attract new opportunities through their talent.
