FDC writes to Speaker Kadaga over reshuffle

FDC has officially written to the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, to officially inform her about the changes in their leadership.

On Friday, Ms Winifred Kiiza was dropped as Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP) in a reshuffle by Party President Patrick Amuriat. Amuriat appointed Gulu Woman MP Ms Betty Aol Ochan as the new Leader of Opposition.

In his announcement, he referred to her as Minority leader, a non-existent title in Uganda's parliamentary hierarchy.

The sacked Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza picked on Amuriat's decision to appoint a Minority leader in parliament, to insist that she is still the leader of opposition in parliament.

In a Press conference held at Parliament, Winnie who was flanked by some of her allies said she had not yet received official communication, and until that happens, she is still the substantive Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

However, the party has now written to the Speaker of Parliament informing her about the changes, and in his letter, the party Secretary General Nathan Nandala-Mafabi informed the speaker that Betty Aol Ocan the Gulu Woman MP, will now be the Leader of Opposition ( The Party President had referred to her as a Minority leader)

The changes will have to wait for speaker Kadaga's decision before they can take effect

The Leader of Opposition is elected by the party with the greatest numerical strength in Parliament and is accorded the status of a Cabinet Minister.

In the reshuffle, Kawempe South MP, Mr Mubarak Munyagwa replaced Mr Abdu Katuntu as the chairperson of the committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises. Rubaga North MP Moses Kasibante will deputise Mr Munyagwa.

Democratic Party’s Betty Nambooze was appointed as the Commonwealth Parliament Association Representative while Mr Roland Kaginda, the Rukungiri Municipality MP is the head of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Mr Nandala Mafabi, the party secretary general, who once served as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has bounced back as the head of the accountability committee.

Kira Municipality MP, Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda, who is also the party spokesman retained his post as Opposition Chief Whip.

Mr Francis Mwijukye, the Buhweju county MP, has been appointed Commissioner of Parliament replacing Dokolo District Woman MP, Ms Cecilia Ogwal.

Mr Fungaroo Kaps Hassan, the Obongi County MP is now the chairperson of Government Assurance Committee and will be deputised by Mr Michael Kabaziguruka, the Nakawa MP.
