A section of youth from the Kigezi region has challenged Electoral Commission chief Simon Byabakama to clear the air on the arrest of their peers who are members of the National Unity Platform campaign team ahead of the 2026 general elections. The calls for clarity come hours after dozens of NUP party supporters, commonly referred to as foot soldiers, were arrested in violent scenes captured on camera as security operatives executed the operation during Robert Kyagulanyi’s campaign trail in Mbarara yesterday. In response, Byabakama advised youth across the country to desist from being used as vigilantes for sectarianism and violence by self-seeking politicians.
