Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena Obote has rallied his party’s parliamentary candidates to forge ahead with their campaigns, even as he remains uncertain about his own presidential bid. Speaking to party members at Senior Quarters in Lira City East—his home constituency—Akena acknowledged that the charged political climate has held him back from running for the presidency on the UPC ticket, but urged candidates to “carry the party message forward” as campaigns kick off on Monday. While describing himself as being “in the waiting room,” Akena assured the gathering that he would still join them on the campaign trail, pledging unwavering support throughout the election season.
