Presidential candidate Raila Odinga has appointed Martha Wangari Karua as his running mate, ahead of presidential elections due in August. The appointment comes a day after Odinga's main opponent, William Ruto chose Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate. If elected Karua may become the first woman to occupy the office of deputy president in Kenya. However, Karua's appointment has created a rift in their Azimio la Umoja coalition. Former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka rejected a promise to become chief minister in a future government, ending his relationship with Raila Odinga, announcing his own bid for the presidency, before hinting that he would hunt for a running mate in Azimio La Umoja in Gideon Moi, son to former president Daniel Moi.
