A Ugandan climate activist, Vanessa Nakate has slammed an international news agency for cropping her out of a photo of young female activists at the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

The Associated Press agency commonly known by its abbreviation AP  ran an article on the Swedish Environmental activist Greta Thunberg’s reaction to criticism and mockery from the US Treasury chief, Steven Mnuchin at the World Economic Forum in Davis. Mnuchin has dismissed Thunberg’s suggestion that governments and companies should cut back drastically on fossil fuels.

The AP shared this story on social media with a picture originally consisting of 5 girls including Nakate. However, Nakate, who was at the extreme left of the picture, was cut out leaving the other 4 Caucasian girls; Greta Thunberg, Loukina Tille of Switzerland, Luisa Neubauer of Germany, and Isabelle Axelsson of Sweden..

“I was cropped out of this photo. Why?” Nakate retweeted AP’s tweet with a comment.

This has raised an online uproar against the AP with people claiming that it was a racist move. Some of Nakate’s supporters asked the AP to release a statement apologising for the move.

Nakate’s fellow activist Greta Thunberg comforted the Ugandan with an apology.

“I’m so sorry they did this to you... you are the last one who would deserve that,” Thunberg tweeted in response to Nakate’s tweet.

Vanessa Nakate has been a climate change activist since 2018. She, on twitter, said that she was inspired by Greta Thunberg and started her activism on the streets of Kampala. She    is currently in Davos Switzerland for the World Economic Forum (WEF) where she has been speaking against negative climate change.

The discussion on climate change at the WEF was a major one with the United States disagreeing with Europe over how to handle the crisis. Officials from the US are being accused of downplaying the situation.
