Trial of Dr. Kiiza Besigye adjourned again due to ill health

Thursday March 23 2023

The trial of Dr. Kiiza Besigye and Samuel Lubega Mukaku, who are accused of inciting the public against high commodity prices in Kampala, has been adjourned once again for a month. The adjournment is to allow Dr. Besigye to recover from an illness he is currently receiving treatment for in the United States of America.

One of Dr. Besigye's lawyers, Wanda Ronald Samuel, informed the presiding magistrate, Asuman Muhumuza of the Buganda Road Court Grade One, that his client is unwell. The prosecution's representatives, Jean Areeba and Ivan Kyazze, also appeared in court and indicated that they had two witnesses present for the hearing. However, they prayed for criminal summons to be issued against Dr. Besigye since he was absent.

The magistrate granted their request and issued criminal summons requiring Dr. Kiiza Besigye to appear in court on 11th May 2023 for further hearing. The prosecution alleges that on 14th June of the previous year, Dr. Besigye and Mukaku used a loudspeaker at Kikuubo_Shawuriyako area downtown in Kampala Business District, calling on people in Luganda dialect to "Banna Uganda muzuukuke twegatte tutaase ensi yaffe," which police understood as inciting the public to take over the government.
