Police arrest Mathias Walukaga’s "polling agents"

Wednesday February 03 2021

The police have arrested at least 45 people who had gathered at musician Mathias Walukaga’s home in Maya Sub-county Wakiso District.

In a statement released by the Deputy Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the 45 were arrested on allegations of doing negligent acts likely to spread an infectious disease.

“The operation was as a result of information of a group of people who had gathered at the musicians home for reason not yet known,” the statement from Owoyesigyire reads.

However, Mathias Walukaga, who is standing for mayorship in Kyengera Town Council on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, says that the individuals arrested by the police were his polling agents.

“I think they intended to weaken my camp,” Mathias Walukaga told journalists.

Walukaga himself was not arrested. According to the police, he ran inside his house after spotting the police officers.

It is important to note that the police statement claims that the operation that led to the arrest of the 45 was carried out at around 12 am (Midnight) in the dark of the night. Walukaga, however, insists that the individuals were being briefed on what to do as the polls go on.

“We have now tried to replace them with other agents who are not well trained,” Walukaga told journalists.

The 45 are currently detained at Nanette Police station, according to the police statement. They are being processed and will be arraigned in the courts of law.
