People do not trust in elections anymore - Lukwago

Wednesday January 20 2021

Kampala Lord Mayor candidate from the FDC party, Erias Lukwago has attributed the low voter turnout in the on-going district elections to lack of trust by the people of Uganda in the polling process.

The incumbent who is standing against 10 other hopefuls told journalists, in Lubaga, Kampala where he cast his vote on Wednesday morning, that the electoral commission (EC) may be to blame considering what he pointed out were irregularities meant to oppress the people’s will to attain change.

“People feel like every time they vote, their will is subverted,” Lukwago told journalists.

Voting materials at Lukwago’s polling station in Bulwa zone, Lubaga arrived 2 hours late, something that rubbed the professional lawyer the wrong way. He was quick to call out the electoral commission which he believes is intentionally muddling the polling process.

“I am tempted to believe that it is a deliberate move by the Electoral Commission to disorganize this exercise, to occasion a miscarriage of justice and democracy,” Lukwago says.

The EC recently held the 2021 general elections that saw President Yoweri Museveni be elected for the 5th time. His biggest opponent, NUP’s Robert Kyagulanyi dominated in Kampala city and most of the central region. Lukwago believes that the process was not free and fair.

He argues that the people of Uganda overwhelmingly supported change in the elections held on Thursday last week but that is not what they got. He believes that this may be the reason as to why Robert Kyagulanyi has been locked up in his own home.

“I hope that, this time, Mr Byabakama will uphold the will of the people,” Lukwago told journalists.

Erias Lukwago has served as Kampala’s Lord Mayor since 2011 when he was elected in the position under the Democratic Party (DP). This, if elected, will be his third term in office.

In July 2020, Lukwago switched parties from DP to Dr KIzza Besigye’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). In the 2021 general elections, FDC was represented by Patrick Oboi Amuriat in the presidential race. Amuriat came in third position , a first for the party since its inception.

The party would also lose its opposition dominance in Parliament to newcomers, National Unity Platform (NUP).
