The Leader of the Opposition, @JoelSsenyonyi, has raised serious concerns about what he perceives as double standards in the treatment of political parties and their members in Uganda. His remarks come in the wake of recent arrests and the detention of MPs from the National Unity Platform (NUP).

According to @JoelSsenyonyi, MPs Hassan Kirumira (Katikamu South), Charles Tebandeke (Bbaale County), and Francis Zaake (Mityana Municipality) are currently being held at Luzira Prison. They were detained after attempting to attend a press conference at the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya. Ssenyonyi expressed frustration over the apparent discrepancy in how different political entities are treated.

“It would be a good thing for the Government to help us understand the seeming double standards,” said @JoelSsenyonyi. “Several political entities continue their activities without issue, yet MPs and other individuals attending their Party headquarters for a press conference find themselves in jail. This raises questions about the consistency of enforcement and fairness.”

In addition to his concerns about political arrests, @JoelSsenyonyi has also criticized President Museveni’s recent appointment of David Karemera to a key position at the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). Karemera, who was previously convicted of tax fraud and corruption by the High Court, has been tasked with leading efforts against these very issues.

“The person appointed to lead this unit, David Karemera, is a convicted criminal,” Ssenyonyi remarked. “Are we setting a thief to catch a thief? Appointing someone with a proven record of corruption to fight corruption undermines the public’s trust and suggests that the fight against corruption is not being taken seriously.”

In response to these developments, Prime Minister @R_Nabbanja stated that the arrested MPs will undergo the necessary legal procedures. She emphasized that their detention was part of the government's duty to protect citizens and their property.

“The government’s actions are in line with our responsibility to maintain law and order and to ensure the safety of all citizens,” said @R_Nabbanja.
