NUP takes Kampala

Kampala has overwhelmingly supported the National Unity Platform (NUP) with wins for MPs across all constituencies but one and an overwhelming number of votes for presidential flag bearer, Robert Kyagulanyi.

Kyagulanyi, who is trailing the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the country’s overall provisional results, has managed to bag a few districts including the Capital City Kampala where he attained 324,463 votes. Museveni got 105,385 votes in Kampala

For the parliamentary seats, NUP will be representing all of Kampala constituencies apart from Kampala Central Division which awarded independent candidate, Mohamed Nsereko the position. Nsereko beat NUP’s Fred Nyanzi, NRM’s Cedric Babu and FDC’s Harold Kaija.

Nakawa Division East decides to go with NUP’s Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo who attained 31,263 votes. He beat Michael Kabaziguruka of FDC, Ruhindi Frederick of NRM, Charles Ronny Keeno of DP and a few independents.

On the western side of Nakawa, NUP’s Joel Ssenyonyi received overwhelming support with 31,653 votes, The NUP spokesperson managed to beat NRM’s Margret Zziwa Nantongo and independent candidate Kenneth Paul Kakande. The former NTV Uganda News anchor managed to win at all polling station in his constituency.

Abubaker Kawalya will represent Rubaga Division North after the NUP candidate denied Beti Kamya, the Minister for lands, that spot. Beti Kamya was on the NRM ticket. Kawalya who attained 39,847 votes also beat Independent Candidate Moses Kasibante

In Rubaga Division South, NUP’s Aloysious Mukasa is the people’s choice. He beat the incumbent Kato Lubwama and long time politician Ken Lukyamuzi from the Democratic Party (DP). Mukasa attained 49,501 votes compared to 2,799 and 931 votes of the other two candidates respectively.

Makindye Division East has shown that it is comfortable with NUP’s Derrick Nyeko who bagged 20,455 votes beating NRM’s Elijah Owobusingye, FDC’s Ibrahim Kasozi and independent candidate Micheal Mabikke.

Allan Ssewanyana will reprise his role as Makindye Division West Member of Parliament after the candidate beat the likes of Farouk Ntege to take the seat. 

Kawempe Division North opted for NUP’s Mohammed Ssegirinya with 41,197 votes while the South went with NUP)’s Bashir Kazibwe Mbaziira with 26,855 votes.

NUP’s Shamim Malende received overwhelming support from Kampala to represent the city’s women. Malende received 312,104 votes which is almost the combined number of votes her competitors received. Malende faced-off with FDC’s Stella Nyanzi who trailed Kampala’s second option, Faridha Nambi of NRM.
