Museveni, Besigye face off in Rukungiri by-election
President Yoweri Museveni will camp in Rukungiri for two days in an effort to help the NRM Candidate Winnie Matsiko win the Rukungiri district woman Member of Parliament by-election.
Winnie Matsiko is contesting against FDC’s Betty Muzanira and independent Shirah Atukunda.
The Court of Appeal, in a two majority decision by Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owinyi-Dolo and Justice Paul Mugamba in March, declared the Rukungiri Woman MP seat vacant on grounds that the 2016 elections were marred by intense voter bribery.
Museveni’s rival, former FDC President Kizza Besigye is already in Rukungiri, and has been campaigning for the FDC Candidate Betty Muzanira.
Rukungiri is Kizza Besigye’s home district, and it is hoped that his party’s candidate will do well in this by-election.
However, the NRM has also deployed its political leaders from Rukungiri including former Ministers Jim Muhwezi and Henry Tumukunde.
According to the Electoral Commission, official Campaigns will end on Tuesday, 29th May 2018, and the by-election will take place on the 31st.
