Police in Jinja District in eastern Uganda on Wednesday 24th July evening foiled a robbery at KCB bank.
Kiira region Police Spokesperson, Ms Diana Nandaula told this reporter on Wednesday evening that the robbery had been staged at the bank located on Main Street by private guards deployed to secure it.
“The incident happened at around 8pm. They first switched off the lights and perhaps when they noticed that police was alert, they fled and abandoned the gun,” Ms Nandaula said.
When asked how many they were, she said she was not sure of the number but detectives were still deployed at the bank conducting investigations.
KCB bank shares a wall with Jinja Police Station.
A boda boda cyclist who declined to be named, said one of the bank staff had gone to the ATM to withdraw money when he noticed the lights inside the banking hall were conspicuously off yet they're always on.
“When he pushed the door to check, the guards pulled him inside, stripped him of all his mobile phones but he managed to get loose and fled to Jinja Central Police Station.
Two tellers, all female, have been taken into custody.
Mr Henry Batambuze, the LC Chairman Main Street East village, suspects a connivance between the robbers and staff.
