The presidential flag-bearer for the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi has accused the Electoral Commission of having double standards after he was summoned by the institution to answer for accusations against him and his party over defying health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Kyagulanyi who is commonly known as Bobi Wine was addressing the media at a press conference at the Electoral Commission headquarters when he claimed that the institution was not enforcing the health SOPs when it came to the NRM camp.
The musician turned politician argues that the NRM Presidential flag bearer, Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni should also have been summoned.
“Museveni and other NRM aspirants have also been pulling crowds at their campaigns,” Kyagulanyi told journalists at the press conference as he showed them pictures of what he says is evidence to his claims.
Kyagulanyi further accused the electoral commission of trying to strain his campaigns by summoning him to meetings and ignoring the brutality from the police.
“I had to travel miles to get here (EC) today and I will have to miss a few campaign venues on my trail,” Kyagulanyi who is expected in Kiruhura and Ibanda lamented.
Kyagulanyi had, on Monday, sent NUP party representatives to attend the meeting with the electoral commission that he was summoned for.
The Electoral Commission released the letter to Kyagulanyi and Amuriat hours before the President who is also a candidate expressed his disappointment in the institution for its handling of the enforcement of health SOPs at the national prayers event that was held in the statehouse on Friday.
"I don't know why the Electoral Commission of Justice Byabakama and the police should allow all this nonsense to go on. I am not happy with the EC," Mr Museveni added.
Due to this, the NUP presidential flagbearer suspects that the EC’s summons had something to do with the President’s communication despite it coming hours after the letters.
