The police have arrested 3 individuals for hovering around a polling station in Magere, Kampala where National Unity Platform’s Presidential flag bearer, Robert Kyagulanyi cast his vote.

The police who used force to disperse an even bigger crowd that the unfortunate 3 were a part of justified their actions saying that lingering around polling centers after voting is against the Electoral Commission’s guidelines.

“Some of the youth groups who stayed around wanted to enter the polling station and participate in the counting of votes,” Police spokesperson Fred Enanga told NTV Uganda.

Enanga says that the police identified 3 ring leaders who were arrested and will help with the investigations into the matter.

“Those who are remaining behind are not doing it for good motivation. They have ill motivations of discrediting the elections,” Enanga said.

Some of the individuals who were lingering around the Magere Polling station told  NTV Uganda that they simply wanted to protect their votes and witness the counting process.

Ugandans were asked to stay 200 meters away from the stations after voting. The directive was meant to manage the spread of COVID-19 at polling stations and ensure orderliness.

However, the 3 opposition leaders; Robert Kyagulanyi from NUP, Mugisha Muntu from ANT and Patrick Oboi Amuriat from FDC urged their supporters to “protect their votes” by staying at the polling stations and monitoring the elections process.
