OIL AND THE ENVIRONMENT: Safeguarding Albertine region’s biodiverse eco-system
The Albertine Rift or Africa’s Western Rift Valley is one of the most bio-diverse regions of the African continent. With more than half of Africa’s birds, 40% of Africa’s mammals and about 20% of its amphibians and plants, it contains more vertebrate species than anywhere else on the continent. As oil and gas firms are on the verge of commencing infrastructural developments after the completion of the Final Investment Decision, there is need to establish an environmental safety-net to safeguard the fragile ecosystem.
