As Uganda approaches its 2026 elections, questions about the credibility of the electoral process remain at the forefront. While elections are held regularly, many critics argue that the ruling NRM maintains power through the manipulation of state resources, intimidation by security forces, and the politicized prosecution of opposition leaders.
This week, Parliament passed two contentious bills that further highlight the complex political landscape. Yet, many Ugandans remain unclear about the implications of these bills and the broader electoral process, despite having participated in previous elections.
Today, we take a closer look at civic engagement in Uganda—from political participation, such as voting and activism, to community involvement through service projects and governance policies with Lutamaguzi Ssemakula, MP for Nakaseke South County; Mugisha James, Commissioner for Compliance and Enforcement at the Equal Opportunities Commission; and Henry Kitambula, Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Rubaga.
