National Airline to be launched in 2019

The State Minister of planning David Bahati has revealed that Uganda Airlines will officially be launched between March and April 2019.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet briefing, Bahati revealed that Cabinet had agreed to launch the National Airline.

According to the Daily Monitor, plans to start another National Airline for Uganda were based on the recommendations of a joint study by Uganda Development Corporation and National Planning Authority.

Its projections were that some Shs1.4 trillion would be good enough to get the project off the ground.

During the reading of the 2018 budget, the Minister of Finance Hon. Matia Kasaija revealed that in the financial year 2018/19 Uganda will have its own National Airline.

''Technical studies have been completed and aircraft will be acquired to commence regional air services'' Kasaija told MPs.

President Idi Amin started Uganda Airlines in 1977 after the breakup of the East African Community and the appropriation of the assets belonging to East African Airways.

The company was closed in 2001.
