President Museveni officially opens the Kampala - Entebbe Express highway

Friday June 15 2018

President Yoweri Museveni has officially commissioned the long-awaited Kampala-Entebbe express highway.

Museveni opened the road with the Chairperson of the Chinese People’s Political and Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wang Yang.

He thanked the Chinese government for the economic support they gave throughout the construction of the express highway.

He further urged the Chinese to continue supporting not only Uganda but Africa as a whole.

This is not the only project the Chinese are involved in Uganda.

They are part of the teams dealing with the modernization of Entebbe Airport, the construction of the Industrial research centre in Nakawa and the Karuma Hydro Power Dam.

The Minister of Works and transport, Hon. Monica Azuba Ntege appealed to local leaders and community members to protect the road assets particularly the road signs and road reserve. She further asked road users to keep the discipline while using the road to avoid damaging the express highway.

The highway that has taken over 5 years to construct and has provided employment opportunities for over 1000 people is a one of a kind infrastructural marvel in Uganda.

The road will hopefully relieve the older Kampala-Entebbe highway of its overwhelming traffic.

A section of the highway measuring about 25km from Busega through Kajjansi to Abayita Ababiri is a toll section where Motorists will be required to pay a toll fee.

Boda Bodas are not allowed to use this express highway.

In February, UNRA officials argued that the road would be a high-speed expressway, hence the ban on Boda Bodas.

The Kampala - Entebbe Express highway cost an estimated $476 Million to construct

The government secured a $350 Million loan from Exim Bank and added $126Million to come up with the funds to construct the highway
