A fifty-eight-year old man has been arrested for allegedly defiling a mentally-ill child in Kwania District.

The suspect, currently under custody at Kwania Central Police Station, is a resident of Olami ‘A’ cell, Ikwera ward in Aduku Town Council.

He was apprehended on Tuesday morning after he allegedly used Shs100 coin to lure a 16-year-old mentally-ill girl into sex.

It is reported the suspect was caught red-handed by members of the community abusing the vulnerable child at her uncle’s home on Monday evening. The suspect had gone to the place to drink alcohol.

Local leaders said that after his arrest on Tuesday, the suspect tested positive for HIV when he was taken for screening for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

In his statement at Ikwera Police Post, the man confessed that he had actually defiled the minor under the influence of alcohol, according to one of the police officers.

The officer said the suspect was transferred to Kwania Central Police Station for further interrogation.

Ms Edith Basalirwa, the Kwania District Police Commander, confirmed that the suspect is in their custody as investigations are ongoing.

“It’s true we are keeping him in our custody, pending ongoing investigations before we arraign him in court,” Ms Basalirwa said.
