MTN, Airtel and Africell sued over Mobile Money tax

Thursday July 12 2018

The Uganda Revenue Authority and 3 Telecommunication companies have been sued at the High court for orders that they immediately refund the one percent tax that they illegally collected from Mobile money depositors since July 1st/2018.

The suit has been filed by 2 concerned citizens; John Robert Tukyakira and Anthony Odur who accuse telecom companies and URA of illegally and erroneously collecting this tax.
Tukyakira and Odur claim the collection of this tax is an infringement of the citizen's fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution.
They also claim the telecommunications companies cannot ably account for the illegally collected money from depositors on behalf of URA.
They want court to issue a permanent injunction stopping URA and the 3 telecommunications companies; Airtel, MTN and Africel from collecting taxes from Mobile money depositors.
The suit comes a days after President Yoweri Museveni said he would lower the tax to 0.5%
