Presidential Aspirant Lt.Gen.Henry Tumukunde has written to the Electoral Commission about his intention to carry out nation-wide consultations

In a letter dated Tuesday, March 03 received by the Electoral Commission, Tumukunde notified the EC that he will proceed to carry out consultations across the country. He says, he does this in accordance with section 3 of the Presidential Elections Act [2005].

He adds that his consultations will target various interest groups in the country with a view of facilitating his decisions ahead of nominations of presidential candidates slated for October 2020.

He also notes that his consultations will extend to the currently existing political groupings and/or political parties, security agencies and law enforcement agencies, the rural population.

Tumukunde served as intelligence chief for the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, Internal Security Organisation and Security minister.

In 2019, he declared his intentions to run for the mayoral city of Kampala city.
However, reports suggested he was aiming for the presidential seat.

In February 2020, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) withdrew all military guards from the former Security Minister, Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, under circumstances that nobody in the army was willing to speak about.

All the 10 UPDF guards attached to Lt Gen Tumukunde’s homes in Kampala, Kiruhura and Rukungiri districts were recalled.

A source said that Lt Gen Tumukunde was stripped of his security guards after security agencies received information that he was making “plans” that did not please the establishment.
