Human rights officials charged with theft of Shs100m

The Secretary to Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Mr Patrick Mabiiho Nyakana and five other top officials have been charged with corruption over the disappearance of more than Shs100m.
Mr Nyakana’s co-accused include Principal Human Rights Officers and an accountant. They were on Thursday charged with offences of abuse of office, embezzlement and conspiracy to defraud.
Other suspects include the director in charge of regional services Mr Wilfred Muganga Asiimwe, Mr Tadeo Wamala (accountant), Ms Rebecca Nassuna (regional human rights officer for Jinja), Mr Willy Agirembabazi (Central region) and Ms Rebecca Agnes Tino in charge of Hoima. They appeared before the Anticorruption Court today.
The officials are under investigation by police following complaints filed with the Lt Col. Edith Nakalema-led State House Anticorruption Unit about embezzlement of Shs100m between November and December last year.
