Eight die in Bugiri bus accident

Sunday September 15, 2019

At least eight people have been confirmed dead following a bus accident that occurred on Sunday morning at Nakawa, Busowa Town Council in Bugiri District along the Jinja-Tororo highway.

Mr Besweri Kawanguzi, an eyewitness, said the accident that occurred at around 5.30am, involved a bus belonging to Modern Coast that was travelling from Kenya and a trailer registration number ZE 2344 that was from Kampala.

Mr Kawanguzi, who was on his way to the garden at the time of the accident, added that the trailer driver lost control and veered to the right-hand side of the road where he collided with the bus.

Police immediately arrived at the scene and took the bodies to Bugiri Hospital mortuary.

The officer-in-charge of traffic at Bugiri Police Station, Mr Hopkins Twesiga, said three people died on the spot, while the other five died on their way to Bugiri Hospital and upon arrival at the health facility.

Mr Twesiga added that of the 40 passengers who were aboard the bus, six died while the survivors were taken to different hospitals including Bugiri, Iganga and Fast Line Medical Centre in Bugiri.

The driver and turn man of the trailer, Mr Twesiga said, also died on spot; however, the identities of the deceased were not readily available by the time of filing this report.

“We are yet to identify the exact cause of the accident because we picked some bottles of waragi in the trailer and suspect that the driver was drunk,” Mr Twesiga said.

Some of the survivors who were rushed to various hospitals and health centres include Hellen Lunyolo, Fauzia Kalele, Adrian Migadde, Lamula Nansubuga, Joseph Mwanja and Kairu Kairu.

By press time, bodies of the deceased were still at Bugiri Hospital mortuary.
