For the first time in 500 years, there is peace in every corner of Uganda - Museveni

Wednesday June 20 2018

President Yoweri Museveni says that for the first time in 500 years, there is peace in every corner of Uganda.

The President noted that there was no peace during the time of kings, or the early days of the NRM, and it was only in 2007 that for the first time peace was achieved in every corner of Uganda.

‘’This is the first time in 500 years that this area that you call Uganda has had peace from corner to corner’’ He said.

‘’It was only in 2007, having defeated, having defeated Kony, having disarmed the cattle rustlers in Karamoja, that for the first time … (we have had peace from corner to corner)’’ Museveni added.

Addressing Parliament on issues to do with security,  Museveni also added that all the elements needed to defeat terrorism in the rural areas are in place.

‘’They involve detecting, locating and destroying an organised group trying to fight guerrilla warfare in the forests, mountains or bush, quickly.

This I can tell you, that this is where we stand now. That is why you hear that ADF is in Congo, but they can not enter here, they know the address of Uganda, but they cannot enter here’’ Museveni told MPs in his address.

The president also added a warning for those trying or planning to destabilise Uganda, saying ‘’We have an all-weather capacity to prevail in any war of aggression against us, any terrorist campaign against the country, or any crime wave’’

The President’s speech to parliament comes a few weeks after former Arua Municipality MP Col Ibrahim Abiriga was gunned down near his home by unknown gunmen near his home in Kawanda.

The MPs death was part of an ongoing crime wave that the country has experienced over the last one year.

The crime wave includes kidnaps, shootings, murders and muggings.
