Rally colleagues relive life of fallen Kalule

Kampala- Like is always the case when dear ones say their Adieus, the motorsports fraternity will take long to come to terms that Edwin Kalule’s charming character will be no more.
Kalule died from the gross effects of being in the line of duty. A friend to many with an infectious smile, the 2018 2WD champion looked on helplessly as he got hit while trying to capture the climaxing moments of the Tavern Kick Challenge Rally in Masaka on April 14.
He battled on for life both in Masaka Hospital where he was transferred from to Nsambya Hospital but it wasn’t meant to be despite earlier news that Kalule was in a better condition last week.
Edmond Kyeyune, the co-driver of Susan Muwonge, relived the fatal accident and bizarre moment to Daily Monitor.
“It happened in the second last section of the day in Kyotera on the 19km Karumuna - Gen Kayanja section,” started Kyeyune.
“Kalule was recording footage on his phone and he didn’t see it (accident) coming. Some fans tried to pull him out of the way but it became difficult for him to get an escape route as there were many cars behind him. He will greatly be missed.”
For Leon Ssenyange, the vice-president of Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) and co-driver of Ronald Ssebuguzi, Kalule is an old friend who he got to know in the late 90s while the two attended high school at St. Henry’s College Kitovu in Nyendo - Masaka.
“Kalule was good footballer and was a core member of the national school team alongside celebrated former SC Villa striker Sam Mukasa,” said Ssenyange.
“Kalule was nicknamed Andrés Iniesta after the legendary Barcelona and Spain midfield maestro because of his playing style in the middle of the pack.”
Such was Kalule’s finesse as a person, every individual that crossed his path definitely has something nice to say about the social-able man with a big heart to help and earn every little success in his youthful life.
