No such thing as a basic black outfit

What you need to know:

Timeless. We love black because of its ability to flatter any shape and any colour. A well accessorised black outfit can never be basic however simple it might be writes, Hassan Ssentongo.

It does not really matter what season and year it is, or style preference you have, black has this unwavering relevance no other colour can match. It is classic, timeless and versatile. It also exudes rigour, sex appeal and, sometimes even wickedness.
Recently, however, its relevance has been losing steam thanks to the wave of colour that is sweeping the fashion scene clean. Women are opting for pops of colour such as neons, blues and obviously pinks. This has a lot to do with what’s going on around us currently, a little bit or a lot of colour is great excitement to cheer us up.

That said, black is still a great option if you’re looking for excitement. Forget everything you thought about it being sombre and basic. It all depends on what you wear or not wear with it.
During Kampala Fashion Week 2018, Gloria Wavamunno showcased a sporty edge of the colour through her chic separates and pleated jumpsuits. Olivia Nanfuka of NFKA worked with tulle and sheer to create romantic but yet dark pieces. For Abbas Kaijuka, who didn’t even show at fashion week, he choose to present an all-black collection during the Miss Tourism finale. His was a play around with detail.

Whether you’re looking to create a classic or trendy ensemble, black is such a universal colour that can achieve almost anything.
Its perks aside, the heat-absorbing qualities of the colour make it such as trick to wear especially during this season where it’s almost too hot to even wear clothes. However, with the right pieces, this can be cracked too. Just be careful on the kind of fabrics you choose.
Truth is, you can never get it wrong in black. This colour wave that’s taking over is only a wave, that’ll pass just as fast as it came.

Wearing head to toe black
- Detail is king. Intricate detail such as frills, pleats and ruffles add to the excitement of the outfit. Consider pairing a basic black piece with one with such detail.
-It’s always fun to go monochrome, but with different fabrics. Adding a leather jacket onto your black dress in another fabric makes for a complete ensemble that’s far from basic.
- Shoes are such an important part of your ensemble. Heeled sandals which show peeks of your feet are always a genius idea.
