A section of Makerere University Students have today, 25th January 2019 pledged to stand in support of those students and academic staff suspended from the institution by the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe.

The students who had personalised caps with the statement, “Where’s my suspension?” and banners declaring their distaste of Prof Nawangwe’s reign said that they were determined to stop lectures from happening until suspended staff are called back.

“We shall soon declare that [Nawangwe] must fall”, said one of the students just before the lot of them burst into song with the popular University anthem.

Last Friday, 18th January 2019, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe had Makerere University Academic Staff Association’s (MUASA) Chairperson, Dr Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi and that of the Administrative staff Association suspended for alleged incitement.

This suspension later on led to industrial action by the University’s staff members who refused to lecture the student until the matter is resolved alongside their other grievances The stand off between the staff members and the administration that has lasted days is feared to possibly lead to a strike by the students whose leaders threatened to take action due to missed lectures.

The request of these Makerere students comes days after Leaders of Government University staff associations asked the institution’s administration to recall suspended staff
