Armed herdsmen invade Aswa ranch in Gulu
The chiefdom’s prime minister says an organization, the Uganda Livestock industries belonging to individuals is responsible for settling the Herdmen in Acholi.

In 1967, the Acholi chiefdom entered an agreement with the government of Uganda to set up a livestock breeding project in Aswa in Pader district.

By the 1980s the livestock multiplication centre had about  30,000 head of cattle on the ranch.

However, the ranch crumbled as insecurity hit the area and livestock was looted.It remained unutilised for over twenty years and the lease to the government for 49 years expired in 2016.Now the prime minister of Acholi chiefdom Ambrose Olaa has told the commission of inquiry into land during its hearing in Gulu that herdsmen commonly known as Balalo have invaded Aswa Ranch in Pader district in Acholi subregion.Olaa says the herdsmen are armed.The chiefdom’s  prime minister says an organization, the Uganda Livestock industries belonging to individuals is responsible for settling the Herdmen in Acholi.The Aswa Ranch land contains Cultural sites for the Chiefdom and  Olaa says the settlers are destroying their heritage.The Aswa ranch was surveyed in the 1960’s covering one thousand acres of land in Pader but the Acholi leaders have raised fears that unscrupulous Ugandans are extending boundaries of the ranch to other districts. The minister for disaster preparedness, Hillary Onek is one of the settlers

 

He also informed the commission that the herdsmen have also grazed into the cassava gardens of the chief of Acholi whose land neighbours the ranch
