Alcohol consumption linked to rise in gender-based violence in Busia
Steven Chebet the LC 1 chairman of Maranchi village says that couples drink from different places and when one comes back before the other, they start fighting.

21-year-old Mariam Swalleh was beaten by her husband because she went out to look for him when he didn't return home at night.

Mariam was left with red injuries, that she has been struggling to treat. On the same village of Maranchi, Anna Wasi says her brother came home and beat her up accusing her of wasting his brother's money.

Authorities in the border district of  Busia say Gender-based violence is on the rise in the area because of the high alcohol consumption and the culture of silence around the vice.

Steven Chebet the LC 1 chairman of Maranchi village says that couples drink from different places and when one comes back before the other, they start fighting.

''You find that the woman is somewhere drinking, and the husband is also somewhere drinking', Mzee can come home when mama is still enjoying'' He said.

This as Uganda and the rest of world continues to commemorate the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

The theme this year is  “Leave No One Behind: End Violence against Women and Girls”.
